Transforming an everyday object into an eyecatcher

From a branding workshop to a full-fledged e-commerce platform and highly customisable product configurator, we designed the brand and a matching website for Simon Maree’s latest addition: Plafondhogedeur.

Introduction

Crafting doors that match your space

Doors, are often overlooked, yet we use them daily to separate our personal space from the outside world. However, they can be a statement object which transforms a room.

Sam Maree, the founder of Simon Maree, has been crafting high-quality doors for more than 100 years and recently launched his newest concept: Plafondhogedeur. The brand had wanted a webshop for some time, so it turned to Wild Digital.

Together, we translated the personalised experience one receives in-store into the digital world via strong branding principles and a highly customisable product configurator.

Research

An interactive workshop to discover the brand’s identity

We kicked off this process with a branding workshop and target audience research. By looking at the why, how and what of Plafondhogedeur, we uncovered key insights such as:

  • The company’s target audience and demographic the website must appeal to is women over the age of 40.

  • Given this, we had to find a balance between a stylish aesthetic with ease of navigation.

  • An inspiration section was vital to help women visualise how much doors can contribute to a space’s look and feel.

User Experience Design

An intuitive experience

A new website that prioritises the user, their experience and ease of interaction while keeping content placement across desktop, tablet and mobile devices consistent.

Our design kept the interface simple and clutter-free. We included easy access to an inspiration section, customer reviews and showroom details to trigger the user’s imagination and promote trust and actionism.

The product configurator

Translating the in-store experience online

To bring the in-store experience to a computer, we created a product configurator that takes the form of a quiz, which allows for endless customisation options. The entire website revolves around directing users towards the configurator, an element that promotes a purchase while demonstrating how many options are at one’s fingertips.

To make the product configurator a playful and interactive experience, we integrated customisable aspects. Allowing users to tailor details such as the door handle, lock, and finishings beyond the general looks, like sizing, primary material, and whether it included a glass cut out, and if so, its shape and height.

However, we saw an opportunity to do more. So we made it possible for a user to select a background which reflects their space and visualise in real-time their style section. We also enabled high-quality zooming options so that all the details could be pictured and customised to perfection.

Website design

Soft yet sophisticated colours and typeface

Using the core values as guidelines, we designed a stylish website with a modern feel while also being soft and more feminine to reflect Plafondhogedeur’s target audience. Thus, we played with white, gold, brass and copper shades—the same metallic tones that Simon Maree often uses for their doors—to make certain elements pop and stress small details.

The warm-toned colour palette was paired with a serif font to add sophistication, style and craftsmanship to the design. The combination of the colours and specific font also played into the aspect of unconventionalism as few websites would be so bold as to pair these two elements together.
